Step 1: Open Your Artwork

  • Open your completed design in Illustrator

  • Outline all text

  • Make sure the artwork is final

Step 2: Create a Cut Line Layer

  • Open Window > Layers

  • Add a new layer

  • Name it Cut Line

  • Move the layer to the top

Step 3: Create the Halo Outline

Use Offset Path for a clean border:

  • Select the artwork

  • Go to Object > Path > Offset Path

  • Enter an offset between 0.08 in and 0.125 in

  • Click OK

This forms the sticker’s halo border.

Step 4: Set the Cut Line Stroke

  • Open Swatches

  • Create a New Swatch

  • Choose Spot Color

  • Name it CutContour

  • Set color to 100% Magenta

  • Apply to the outline stroke

  • Make sure there is no fill

This marks the exact cutting path.

Step 5: Clean Up the Path

  • Ensure the cut line is one single path

  • Remove overlaps and double lines

  • No fill added

  • Use View > Outline to verify

Step 6: Lock the Artwork Layer

  • Lock your design layer

  • Keep only the Cut Line layer editable

This prevents accidental changes.

Step 7: Save the File

Save as AI or PDF:

  • Keep editing capabilities

  • Preserve layers

  • Keep the spot color intact
